1. Duties of Editors
- Editors are responsible for the academic quality of the articles received and published, and for deciding which manuscripts are published, based on their originality, scientific quality, and relevance to the journal's scope.
- Editors evaluate manuscripts fairly, regardless of the authors' race, gender, religion, ethnicity, nationality, institution, or political views.
- Editors keep all information about submitted manuscripts confidential and do not disclose the identity of reviewers.
- Editors do not use unpublished material from a submitted manuscript for their own research without the written consent of the authors.
- Editors declare any conflict of interest and hand over the handling of a manuscript to another editor when a conflict exists, as described in the Peer Review Policy.
- Editors provide clear guidance to authors and reviewers, and respond to complaints and allegations of misconduct in line with sections 10 and 11 below.
2. Duties of Reviewers
- Reviewers assess manuscripts objectively and professionally, and support their opinions with clear arguments and constructive feedback that help authors improve their work.
- Reviewers treat manuscripts as confidential documents. They must not share, discuss, or use the content of a manuscript for personal benefit, and must not upload it to AI tools.
- Reviewers decline an invitation if they lack the relevant expertise, cannot complete the review on time, or have a conflict of interest with the authors.
- Reviewers notify the editor of any suspected plagiarism, data fabrication, duplicate publication, or other misconduct.
- Reviewers point out relevant published work that has not been cited, without asking authors to cite the reviewer's own work unless it is genuinely relevant.
3. Duties of Authors
- Authors ensure that their work is original, free of plagiarism, and does not infringe copyright.
- Authors present their results honestly, without fabrication, falsification, or inappropriate manipulation of data, and describe their methods clearly enough for the work to be replicated and verified.
- Authors ensure that the manuscript has not been published elsewhere and is not under consideration by another journal.
- Authors properly cite all sources and acknowledge the work of others that influenced their research.
- Authors disclose all sources of funding and any conflicts of interest.
- When authors discover a significant error in their published article, they must promptly notify the editor and cooperate to correct or retract the article.
4. Authorship and Contributorship
Authorship should be limited to those who have made a significant contribution to the conception, design, data collection, analysis, or interpretation of the study, who have drafted or critically revised the manuscript, who have approved the final version, and who agree to be accountable for the work. Other contributors (for example, those who provided technical help, data access, or general supervision only) should be acknowledged in the Acknowledgments section.
- The corresponding author ensures that all co-authors have seen and approved the final version and agree to its submission.
- Gift, guest, and ghost authorship are not allowed. AI tools cannot be listed as authors.
- Any change to the author list (addition, removal, or change of order) after submission must be requested in writing by the corresponding author, with the reason and the signed agreement of all authors. Changes after acceptance are allowed only in exceptional cases.
5. Conflicts of Interest
All authors must include a conflict of interest statement in the manuscript and disclose all sources of funding. A conflict of interest exists when financial, institutional, or personal relationships could inappropriately influence the work. If there is no conflict, authors state: "The authors declare no conflict of interest." The handling of manuscripts submitted by editors and reviewers of EKBIS is described in the Peer Review Policy.
6. Plagiarism and Redundant Publication
EKBIS does not tolerate plagiarism in any form. Every manuscript is checked with Turnitin, and the maximum similarity index accepted is 22%. Publishing the same findings in more than one journal, or submitting the same manuscript to several journals at once, is not allowed. Full provisions are given in the Plagiarism Policy.
7. Use of AI Tools
Authors must disclose any use of generative AI tools. Editors and reviewers must not upload manuscripts to AI tools. Full provisions are given in the AI Tools Policy.
8. Research Involving Human Participants
Research involving human participants must respect their rights, dignity, privacy, and welfare. Authors must describe ethical considerations in the Methods section, including how consent was obtained and, where applicable, the name of the ethics committee and the approval number. Authors must also follow the rules of their own institution and applicable law, including Law No. 27 of 2022 on Personal Data Protection for research conducted in Indonesia.
8.1 Guidelines for Questionnaire-Based Social and Behavioral Research
Most studies in EKBIS collect primary data through questionnaires. The following guidelines apply to such studies that are non-interventional and pose minimal risk. They are provided as academic guidance and do not constitute institutional ethical approval.
a. Minimal-risk questionnaire research. A questionnaire-based study is considered minimal risk when:
- it involves no medical, psychological, or physical intervention;
- it collects data on perceptions, attitudes, behaviors, or experiences;
- it does not collect names, contact details, or other information that directly identifies respondents, and demographic data are collected only in general categories (for example, age range, education level, or type of occupation);
- participation does not expose respondents to legal, social, financial, employment, or psychological harm.
b. When formal ethics approval may not be required. A minimal-risk study may be conducted without formal ethics committee approval, unless the authors' institution requires it, when all of the following conditions are met:
- Participation: voluntary, without deception, coercion, or pressure; respondents may stop at any time before submitting their answers without any consequences;
- Data: collected anonymously, analyzed and reported only in aggregate form;
- Topic: questions do not involve sensitive topics (such as health, trauma, sexuality, religion, political views, or illegal activities);
- Method: self-administered questionnaires (online or paper-based), without direct intervention by the researcher.
c. When formal ethics approval is required. Ethics committee approval must be obtained when required by institutional regulations or applicable law, and especially when the research involves vulnerable participants, sensitive personal data, sensitive topics, deception, intervention, or a foreseeable risk of harm.
d. Informed consent. Respondents must receive clear information about the purpose of the study, voluntary participation, the right to stop participating, how the data will be used, and how confidentiality will be maintained. Consent must be obtained before data collection. For online questionnaires, the first page should contain the information and a consent option. Respondents must be informed of this before they answer.
e. Data protection. Researchers must collect only the data needed for the study, store the data securely, limit access to the research team, and anonymize data before sharing. Incentives for respondents, if any, must not be so large that they become a form of pressure.
f. Ethics statement in the manuscript. Every manuscript based on primary data from human participants must include an ethics statement in the Methods section. Example:
"This study was a minimal-risk anonymous questionnaire survey. Participation was voluntary, and informed consent was obtained on the first page of the online questionnaire before respondents could continue. No personally identifiable data were collected. In accordance with [the policy of the authors' institution / the EKBIS guidelines], formal ethics committee approval was not required."
Or, where approval was obtained: "This study was approved by [name of ethics committee], approval number [number], dated [date]."
9. Data and Reproducibility
Authors must describe their data sources, sampling, instruments, and analysis procedures clearly enough for the study to be replicated. Authors are encouraged to include a data availability statement explaining whether and how the data can be accessed (for example, in a repository or on reasonable request to the corresponding author). Editors may ask authors to provide the raw data during the review process.
10. Handling Research and Publication Misconduct
Misconduct includes, among other things, plagiarism, data fabrication or falsification, duplicate publication, manipulation of authorship, citation manipulation, undisclosed conflicts of interest, and manipulation of the peer review process. Anyone may report suspected misconduct to the editor at ekbis@gunadarma.ac.id, with supporting evidence.
- The Editor-in-Chief acknowledges the report and makes an initial assessment of the evidence. The identity of the person reporting is kept confidential.
- The authors are informed of the allegation and given the opportunity to respond.
- The investigation follows the relevant COPE flowcharts. Where needed, the editor may consult other editors, independent experts, or the authors' institution.
- Depending on the findings, actions may include rejection of the manuscript, a correction, an expression of concern, retraction of the article, informing the authors' institution, or restrictions on future submissions from the authors.
The same procedure applies to allegations against editors or reviewers. If the allegation concerns the Editor-in-Chief, it is handled by a senior editor appointed by the publisher.
11. Complaints and Appeals
- Appeals against editorial decisions. Authors who believe a decision was based on a factual error or misunderstanding may submit an appeal to the Editor-in-Chief within 30 days of the decision, with a clear scientific explanation. The appeal is reviewed by the Editor-in-Chief or by another editor who was not involved in the original decision, who may consult an additional reviewer. The outcome of the appeal is final. The manuscript is not processed further while the appeal is under consideration.
- Complaints about the journal's processes. Complaints about delays, the conduct of editors or reviewers, or other aspects of the publication process can be sent to ekbis@gunadarma.ac.id. The journal will acknowledge each complaint and aims to respond within 14 working days.
12. Post-Publication Discussion
EKBIS welcomes scholarly discussion of published articles. Readers who wish to comment on, question, or criticize a published article may send a letter to the editor at ekbis@gunadarma.ac.id. If the comment is substantive, the editor will invite the authors to respond, and the comment and the response may be published together. Comments must be scholarly, respectful, and focused on the content of the article.
13. Corrections, Expressions of Concern, and Retractions
- Correction (erratum/corrigendum): published when an error affects part of an article but does not invalidate its findings. The correction notice is published in the next issue and linked to the original article.
- Expression of concern: published when there is serious doubt about an article and the investigation is ongoing or inconclusive.
- Retraction: issued when the findings are unreliable (because of misconduct or serious error), or in cases of plagiarism, duplicate publication, or unethical research.
A retracted article is not removed from the journal website. It remains available with a clear "RETRACTED" watermark on every page, and a retraction notice explaining the reason is published, linked to the original article, and recorded in its DOI metadata. Articles are withdrawn completely only in exceptional legal cases, and a notice is still published.
14. Duties of the Publisher
The publisher, Bagian Publikasi Universitas Gunadarma, guarantees the editorial independence of EKBIS, supports the editors in handling ethical issues, and ensures the long-term preservation and availability of all published articles.

7. Penggunaan Perangkat AI
Penulis wajib mengungkapkan setiap penggunaan perangkat AI generatif.
a. Penelitian kuesioner berisiko minimal. Penelitian berbasis kuesioner dianggap berisiko minimal apabila:
- tidak melibatkan intervensi medis, psikologis, atau fisik;
- mengumpulkan data tentang persepsi, sikap, perilaku, atau pengalaman;
- tidak mengumpulkan nama, informasi kontak, atau informasi lain yang secara langsung mengidentifikasi responden, dan data demografis hanya dikumpulkan dalam kategori umum, misalnya rentang usia, tingkat pendidikan, atau jenis pekerjaan;
- Partisipasi: sukarela, tanpa penipuan, paksaan, atau tekanan; responden dapat berhenti kapan saja sebelum mengirimkan jawaban tanpa konsekuensi;
- Data: dikumpulkan secara anonim, dianalisis dan dilaporkan hanya dalam bentuk agregat;
- Topik: pertanyaan tidak membahas topik sensitif seperti kesehatan, trauma, seksualitas, agama, pandangan politik, atau aktivitas ilegal;
11. Pengaduan dan Banding
- Banding atas keputusan editorial. Pemrosesan naskah dihentikan selama banding sedang dipertimbangkan.
- Pengaduan tentang proses jurnal.
