The growing process of deep mediatization has transformed intercultural encounters from predominantly interpersonal interactions into communicative practices embedded within digitally connected collectivities. This article aims to reconceptualize intercultural communication competence by situating it within the context of mediatized collectivities. Employing a qualitative approach with a conceptual desk study design, the study synthesizes contemporary scholarship on intercultural communication, mediatization, media practice, and digital ethnography through thematic and integrative analysis. The findings indicate that conventional approaches to intercultural communication competence, which primarily emphasize cognitive, affective, and behavioral dimensions, are insufficient to explain communication practices occurring within collectivities constituted through media environments. The study demonstrates that media-related practices play a constitutive role in shaping collective identities, social relations, and shared meanings. Accordingly, this article proposes a conceptual framework of intercultural communication competence consisting of cognitive, affective, behavioral, and collective dimensions. The framework offers a theoretical bridge between intercultural communication studies and mediatization research and provides a foundation for future investigations of communication in increasingly mediatized societies.
